Crossroads Radio Trade

Every month, our friends over at Radio K in Minnesota will be teaming up with a college radio station from another state to spotlight to local music scenes native to the area. For the first installment, they have teamed up with Radio UTD to trade local Texas music (particularly focused in the DFW area) with their local Minnesota artists.
This installment of Crossroads was produced by Laura Carroll, Chase Mathey, Zach McCormick, Caleigh Souhan, and Jon Schober.

Crossroads: Minnesota by RadioK
THE BLIND SHAKE - “Hurracan”
The Blind Shake are trio of detuned, garage-stomp, noisy punk rock music makers from Minneapois, MN. Known for ferocious live shows and home recorded albums, the band released Rizzograph (2005), Carmel (2007), and a split 7” with Birthday Suits (2008) all on Learning Curve Records.
BUFFALO MOON - “Moses Baby”
Congregating haphazardly under a common admiration for traditional samba, Brazilian psychedelia, and American rock and roll, Buffalo Moon formed in 2009 to flesh out the songs of lead singer, Karen Freire. Shoddy equipment in tow and with little to no direction, their early shows nonetheless caught the attention of a cold-climate music scene looking for something tropical.
MALLY AND THE SUNDANCE KID - “Cloud Culture”
Showing traces of Nas and early Jay-Z, MaLLy came to light with the ambitious, guts-spilling 2009 album “The Passion.”
NIGHT MOVES - “Horses”
Minneapolis band Night Moves’ catchy combination of MGMT-like vocals, country strains, and electronic production have made them an up-and-coming local favorite. Featuring members of Mouthful of Bees, Food Pyramid, and Battle Royale.
THE CHAMBERMAIDS - “China Blue”
Minneapolis/St. Paul siblings Neil and Martha Weir formed The Chambermaids (originally the Shut-Ins) in 2003. They have shared the stage with the likes of Grant Hart, Tapes ‘n Tapes, and Calvin Johnson.
SIMS - “Burn It Down”
Restless and passionate but with an unflinching realism at his core, Sims has seen enough of life to know there are no easy answers. His second full-length release, Bad Time Zoo, reflects this rapper’s ongoing quest for solid understanding in a society on the brink of dystopia. For Sims, it’s been a long road. (Part of the Doomtree Collective)
SLEEPING IN THE AVIARY - “Love Police”
“It’s got a fuzzed-out doo-wop feeling, and all the songs are about girls!” says Sleeping in the Aviary’s Elliott Kozel. “It’s like Dion and the Belmonts with a hangover trying to figure out how to use a Big Muff pedal, or the Everly Brothers beating up some kid in the bathroom of a high-school gymnasium and then feeling bad about it later.”
FOOD PYRAMID - “E-Harmony”
Bringing their trilogy to completion, Food Pyramid’s latest cassette for Moon Glyph, “III” captures the trio at their most sweeping - inviting fourth and fifth members into the mix and adding an array of sensations to their palette of kosmsiche-inspired compositions.
JOHN MAUS - “Quantum Leap”
John Maus lives in his birthplace of Austin, Minnesota. Whilst working towards his PhD in Political Science he also composes music that taps into melancholic fantasy and affirms that we are all truly alive. Questing synthesizers, tensely strung bass lines and chasing drum machines providing the perfect backdrop for John’s deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal.
HOLLOW BOYS - “America Modern”
Formed out of the ashes of Zombie Season, Hollow Boys is one of more mysterious local bands at the moment.
ME AND MY ARROW - “LA Air”
There’s been a lot of talk about the size of local band Me & My Arrow, but it’s warranted, since there are only a small handful of Minneapolis stages that can accommodate them comfortably. They’ve recently trimmed down from nine members to a relatively lean seven, but in order to pull off the anthemic, heavily layered sound that’s become the band’s stock-in-trade, the largeness is a necessity rather than overkill.

LONESOME GHOST - “Seashell”
Lonesome Ghost is a backyard throw down garage surf kind of band. Their latest song release, “Seashell,” was recorded in an empty house and has more harmonies and jams to what they’ve put out in the past.

RTB2 - “When Hammer Hits Stone”
Stomping around Denton and Dallas for innumerable gigs over the years, RTB2 has built of reputation for their consistently interesting mix of instrumental dexterity and soulful vocals. With the duo claiming everyone from Elton John to Captain Beefheart as influences, it’s easy to see why their music exudes a comfortingly familiar vibe while still showcasing a wide palette of sounds. You’d be surprised what these two can pull out of a telecaster and bare bones drum kit.
MAN FACTORY - “Balrog 24/7”
Man Factory is a five-man power pop band whose recent goal is to release a pop opera album trilogy based on the Street Fighter video games. Yes, the songs are really about the Street Fighter characters. The second installment, Round 2, was just released last year.
BETHAN - “Vague”
Emerging from the ashes of Denton’s Novaak, Bethan came to fruition after Jessi James met producer Roger Greenawalt at SXSW 2010. The result was a series of sessions in a Brooklyn studio that came together to form the first release, “Chapter 1:”. With James evoking the foreboding vocal qualities of Beth Gibbons and still managing to waver into the optimistic tone of St. Vincent, there is wide array of emotions wrapped-up into the instrumentally rich and impeccably tight production.
DREAMED - “Psychodrama”
Born out of Jessica Minshew’s bedroom in Denton, Dreamed is a lo-fi recording project that has already been in several playlists and mix tapes. The unique combination of Jessica’s sultry voice and hazy, slow melodies are what landed her a spot on Gorilla vs Bear’s Favorite Songs of 2011.
DATAHOWLER - “Radar Indicates”
Datahowler is the newest cerebral music project of the young, yet extremely experienced, Dallas bred Ross Edman. Using only personally made samples, Datahowler’s music combines senses of psychedelia, hip-hop, electronic and ambient to create perfectly mastered, inventive pieces.
NEW FUMES - “Millenium Crux”
Daniel Huffman is the man behind all the psychedelic noises of New Fumes. After being a part of several bands, he decided to create something a little different and all his own. During live shows, kaleidoscopic projections accompany his song, giving listeners a multi-dimensional experience with his music.
BOTANY - “Feeling Today”
Hailing from Austin, Texas, Spencer Stephenson’s chillwave project Botany combines the use of his sample pad with live performance to create a unique and trippy experience. He has shared the stage with artists such as This Will Destroy You, Sundress, New Fumes, and Panda Bear.
SUNDRESS - “Sailor’s Vision”
Evolving through a number of name and lineup changes, Sundress eventually warmed-up and settled on a lush sound that caught the attention of many critics and touring big names, landing them prized slots at SWSW and 35 Denton. It’s hard not to love the hype, as anyone with an appreciation for subdued vocal melodies fused with layers of guitar fuzz will quickly pick-up on the vibe. Their recently released, self-titled EP places them amongst the most exciting in the burgeoning psych pop realm.
STEPHEN FARRIS - ”Inaudible”
Houston local Stephen Farris not only creates textured, deep tracks with plenty of melted synth and glitchiness, he also derives a lot of his sound from manipulating old VHS tapes. This combination of visual and sound editing help create fascinatingly experimental and visceral experiences.
SOVIET - ”Heaven, Texas”
Soviet’s tight trio of angsty garage rockers formed last year and released their first EP, Forever Today, in January of this year. They’ve shared the stage with cool folks like Cloud Nothings, Sundress, Titus Andronicus, and The Young Maths. Their new EP will be released December 6!
